Houthis Claim Missile Strike on Riyadh Airport, Oil Pipeline Hit

(MENAFN) Yemen’s Houthi movement said early Monday it had targeted King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and attacked pumping stations along the kingdom’s East-West crude oil pipeline, a vital artery for Saudi energy exports.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement on X that the group struck the airport with a ballistic missile. He added that the Houthis also carried out drone attacks on crude oil pumping stations along the pipeline. Neither claim has been independently verified.

Shortly before the announcement, Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense Directorate said its early warning system had triggered a danger alert for Riyadh. Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said a Houthi ballistic missile aimed at the capital had been intercepted.

The East-West Pipeline ranks among Saudi Arabia’s most important routes for moving crude. Run by the state-owned oil giant Saudi Aramco, it spans roughly 1,200 kilometers (745 miles), from the Abqaiq area in the east to Yanbu on the Red Sea coast. The line lies entirely inside Saudi territory and carries crude from eastern production and processing facilities to refineries and export terminals along the Red Sea. It also gives the kingdom an overland option for shipping oil to the Red Sea without depending on maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest claims come as fighting between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis has intensified in recent months. The group has targeted Saudi Arabia with ballistic missiles and drones, accusing the kingdom of responsibility for attacks against it.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since September 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces. The Saudi-led coalition has backed the country’s internationally recognized government since March 2015.
