Town of Nantucket Recognizes Energy Efficiency Day on October 7
Today, the Town of Nantucket joins communities across the country in celebrating Energy Efficiency Day, observed annually on the first Wednesday in October.
Energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective ways to lower energy bills, reduce emissions, and improve comfort at home. Saving energy starts with identifying where energy is being wasted, often through inadequate insulation and air leaks, and making targeted improvements based on the needs of your home.
To take the first step, the Town encourages residents to schedule a no-cost Mass Save Home Energy Assessment. During the assessment, an energy specialist will evaluate the home for energy-saving opportunities and provide an Energy Action Report with customized recommendations to reduce costs and improve year-round comfort.
Participants may receive up to 100% off insulation upgrades, along with generous rebates on energy-efficient appliances and equipment, including air-source heat pumps and induction stoves. Other eligible upgrades, such as insulated windows, residential batteries, and heat-pump water heaters, may also qualify for 0% financing through the Mass Save HEAT Loan Program.
In-person energy assessments are recommended every three years and are now being scheduled for Monday, November 2 through Friday, November 6.
Visit Ngrid.com/Nantucket to schedule your appointment and learn about other Nantucket energy-saving programs and events, including these upcoming appliance recycling opportunities on Saturday, November 14:
- Dehumidifier Turn-In: Bring an old but working dehumidifier to the Public Safety Facility at 4 Fairgrounds Road between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM and receive a $30 rebate check. No registration required. Rain or shine.

Energy Efficiency Project Highlight:
New Heat Pump at IT Satellite Office, 2 Fairgrounds Road
The Town continues to invest in energy efficiency projects that reduce energy use, improve municipal buildings, and help control operating costs. Recent and ongoing upgrades include high-efficiency heating systems, weatherization, and other building improvements.
Last month, the Town installed a new high-efficiency air-source heat pump and modern thermostat at the IT satellite office at 2 Fairgrounds Road, replacing electric resistance baseboard heat and a noisy window air conditioner that was inadequate for the space.
The new system provides efficient year-round heating and cooling, improves comfort and reduces noise for staff, and is projected to save approximately 1,800 kWh, or more than $500 in electricity costs annually. The project was fully funded through Green Communities grant funding and National Grid incentives.
“The heat pump has been a great improvement to our office. The temperature is much more comfortable and consistent, and it’s nice not having to rely on the baseboard heat in the winter and a loud window air conditioner in the summer. The new system is much quieter, which makes a real difference when we’re on the phone or in meetings, and it’s great to have heating and cooling all in one system.”
"With the minisplit heat pump unit now installed in our office, we're no longer worried about our network equipment overheating here."
