Provided by AGPIn a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said it was closely following the situation involving the tanker M/T Eureka, which was seized in Yemeni territorial waters before being moved toward Somalia.
The ministry added that Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty instructed Egypt’s embassy in Mogadishu to monitor the case of the eight Egyptian sailors on board and work toward securing their release as quickly as possible.
He also directed diplomats to maintain high-level contact with Somali authorities to ensure the safety and protection of the crew.
The announcement followed earlier reports from Yemeni officials stating that a vessel had been hijacked on May 2 off the coast of Shabwa Governorate by suspected pirates, with a crew that included both Egyptian and Indian nationals.
On Sunday, a family member of one of the sailors publicly appealed for their release, saying the hijackers had demanded a ransom.
Piracy off the Somali coast was widespread between 2008 and 2018 before declining for several years, but incidents have reportedly begun to re-emerge since late 2023 amid renewed regional instability.
