Australia’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Drop 1.9 Percent
A quarterly report released Wednesday by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) placed national output at 444.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent — down 8.5 million tons from the 452.8 million tons recorded over the prior 12-month period.
The electricity sector led the decline, posting a 3.1 percent reduction in emissions as coal-fired generation continued to lose ground to a surging renewables industry. The Australian Energy Market Operator reported that clean energy sources powered 42.7 percent of the National Electricity Market in the third quarter of 2025 — a figure that was then eclipsed by a record-breaking 51.0 percent share in the fourth quarter.
Australia's climate and energy minister, Chris Bowen, confirmed that emissions for the year to September now sit 27.4 percent below 2005 baseline levels — a significant marker as the federal government races toward its legally binding target of a 43 percent reduction from those levels by 2030, and at least 62 percent by 2035.
"We are on track to meet our climate targets if we stay the course and continue to lift our efforts," Bowen said.
Preliminary figures covering the full 2025 calendar year, also included in Wednesday's report, painted an even more encouraging picture — estimating total national emissions at 443.1 million tons, reflecting a 2.0 percent decrease from 2024 levels and a 27.6 percent reduction compared to 2005.
