Zelenskyy Hails Fresh U.S. Sanctions on Russia’s Top Oil Companies

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday praised fresh sanctions imposed by the United States on Russia’s leading oil producers, describing the move as a “fair and absolutely deserved step” toward ending the conflict.

In a statement posted on Telegram, Zelenskyy said, “The new US sanctions against Russia’s oil giants are a clear signal that prolonging the war and spreading terror come at a cost.” He expressed his appreciation to President Donald Trump and his administration for making a “resolute and well-targeted decision.”

He emphasized the importance of sustained pressure on Russia, stating, “It is precisely pressure on Russia that will be effective for achieving peace, and sanctions are one of its key components.” Zelenskyy further asserted, “a reliable and lasting peace has no alternative.”

The US Treasury Department announced on Wednesday sanctions targeting Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. The measures respond to Moscow’s “lack of serious commitment” to peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

According to the Treasury’s statement, these sanctions are designed to “degrade the Kremlin’s ability to raise revenue for its war machine” and to “support its weakened economy.”
