Nvidia Announces Resumption of AI Chip Exports to China

(MENAFN) Nvidia announced Tuesday it will restart shipments of its H20 AI chips to China following commitments from the US government to ease licensing restrictions.

In a company statement, Nvidia said, "The U.S. government has assured NVIDIA that licenses will be granted, and NVIDIA hopes to start deliveries soon. Finally, (CEO Jensen) Huang announced a new, fully compliant NVIDIA RTX PRO GPU that 'is ideal for digital twin AI for smart factories and logistics.'"

Earlier this year, the US imposed export controls requiring Nvidia to obtain licenses indefinitely to sell H20 chips to China, intensifying tensions in the ongoing tech conflict with Beijing.

The restrictions forced Nvidia to anticipate impairments of up to $5.5 billion in its fiscal first quarter, tied to the limited access of H20 chips to the Chinese market.

Nvidia’s statement revealed that CEO Jensen Huang engaged with US policymakers and former President Donald Trump, reaffirming the company’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster domestic manufacturing, strengthen AI infrastructure, generate jobs, and maintain America’s leadership in AI innovation.

Meanwhile, in Beijing, Huang held discussions with government and industry leaders on how AI technologies could boost productivity and create new economic opportunities. These talks emphasized the global collaboration needed to develop safe and secure AI systems for the common good.

The company highlighted Huang’s remarks during these visits: “As Huang noted during his visits, the world has reached an inflection point — AI has become a fundamental resource, like energy, water and the internet. Jensen emphasized Nvidia’s commitment to support open-source research, foundation models and applications which democratize AI and will empower emerging economies in every region, including Latin America, Europe, Asia and beyond.”

Huang added, “General-purpose, open-source research and foundation models are the backbone of AI innovation,” and stated, “We believe that every civil model should run best on the U.S. technology stack, encouraging nations worldwide to choose America.”

Following the announcement, Nvidia’s stock surged more than 4% by Tuesday’s market close.

This development follows a recent draft trade framework agreement between Washington and Beijing, which allowed the US to ease certain tech export restrictions while China agreed to reduce export limitations on rare earth materials.
