CHICAGO, IL, USA, September 23, 2021 / — Professor Phill Cartwright, a leading light of innovation in manufacturing of electrical and mechanical equipment, aerospace and construction industries, and Non-Executive Director of Syndem, has sadly passed away at the age of 54.

Over the last 35 years, Cartwright championed the role of innovation and new technology in a number of UK industries, supporting the realization of radical new approaches across a number of different businesses, organizations and trade bodies including some of the UK’s most strategic important industries.

As well as his role as a Non-Executive Director at Syndem LLC, he was an advisory board member at Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), chairman of Lontra and a senior advisor to consultancy and construction firm Mace.

Across a long career across different UK industries, Phill spent six years as Head of Electrical Power and Control Systems at Rolls-Royce, as well as roles delivering international power and energy infrastructure projects, integrated new technologies and manufacturing processes in China, India, Brazil and USA with ABB, Alstom and Areva, which provided the foundations for the company’s leading role in the next era of aviation, and building capability across the aerospace and marine divisions.

When he left Rolls-Royce in 2012, he left behind a strong team of electrical systems engineers, and an electrical systems activity that spanned the UK, USA, Norway, Germany and Singapore.

In the UK construction industry, he took a leading role in the transformation of the sector, supporting the introduction of modern methods of construction and adopting best practice from the automotive and manufacturing industries. He served as Director of the Engineering Excellence Group for Laing O’Rourke and supported the Government’s intervention in high value manufacturing as Chief Technology Officer for the High Value Manufacturing Catapult between 2015 and 2017.

He was the founding chair of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) Power Sector Executive and has been an active member and adviser to the UK Government’s Nuclear Industry Council. He was a Fellow of the IET, an active visiting Professor in Energy Systems at The University of Manchester – where he studied for his PhD in the early 2000s – and The University of Strathclyde, the author of over 300 technical publications, co-author of two books and several patents related to the mathematical modelling, control and integration of energy systems.

He played a crucial role in the delivery of a number of high-profile UK construction and engineering projects. This included the City of London’s distinctive Leadenhall Building, which was built ahead of schedule thanks to the heavy use of off-site construction techniques. The Manchester Metrolink, another project in which he had a hand, was also completed early, thanks in no small part to the use of virtual design and production techniques more commonly associated with the automotive industry.

His career also included an academic position as Professor of Practice in Loughborough’s School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering, helping to raise the national and international profile of the high-level research undertaken at Loughborough.

Before entering industry, Phill joined the Royal Engineers straight from school, with no qualifications and stayed for five years, completing his service with an ‘Exemplary and Honourable Record’, something he was very proud of. When he left he spent a short time as a London bus driver before starting to study at Staffordshire University, where he completed a foundation course and an undergraduate degree, graduating in 1996.

Alongside his sharp intellect and achievements, Phill will be remembered by his colleagues and friends as humble, generous with his time and genuinely supportive of developing talented people across the organizations he worked with and for.

Professor Malcolm Cook, acting dean for the school of architecture, building and civil engineering at Loughborough University, said: “Phill was a true gentlemen and highly respected colleague in our school, opening doors that provided great opportunities for our staff. His leadership and gentle but effective manner, will be sorely missed.”

Phill is survived by his wife, Emily, his daughter Pippa and his sons Harry and Edward.

His family would like to have his funeral quietly and with his family. The service for Phill is at 11.30 on Friday September 25, 2021 so, if you’d like to say a prayer or send him your special thoughts, that is the time to say goodbyes.

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, September 22, 2021 / — The ‘Suitcase’ Home Water System, created by the Navajo field staff of human rights nonprofit DigDeep, has been honored in Fast Company’s 2021 Innovation by Design Awards as a Finalist in the Social Good category.

Water and Solar Technicians from DigDeep’s Navajo Water Project invented the ‘Suitcase System’ during the COVID-19 pandemic, to deliver life-saving clean water to residents across the Navajo Nation. Over 30% of people there live without running water at home, which contributed to the rapid spread of COVID-19. DigDeep’s team had been working on the ground since 2015 to install running water in remote homes using their solar-powered, off-grid ‘Home Water System’ – but had to halt in-home installations during the pandemic to safeguard the health of their team members and clients.

“After halting in-home installations, we lost our coworker and friend, Ernest, to the virus,” says Cindy Howe, Navajo Water Project Manager. “When he got sick, he told us to keep going. Our neighbors still need water, now more than ever. Inspired by Ernest, we got creative about how to redesign our Home Water Systems to find a way to install fresh water supplies without entering the home itself. Water is life.”

The Suitcase System is engineered for zero contact installation and to withstand the desert extremes: high temperature days and sub-zero nights. Like DigDeep’s traditional Home Water System, the Suitcase connects to a 1200-gallon underground water tank buried outside the home, which is refilled with fresh water from DigDeep’s network of water trucks. The pump, filter, and solar components are protected inside the ‘Suitcase’ box, which dispenses water from a spigot. Instead of traveling miles by car or on foot to collect drinking water, residents now have access to running water just steps from their door.

As soon as it’s safe to resume in-home construction, these 100 units will be moved inside and attached to sinks and water heaters, effectively transforming the temporary ‘Suitcase System’ into a full, solar-powered Home Water System.

SRP Partners with Solar and Storage Developer, Clēnera, to Build One of Arizona’s Largest Solar Projects

BOISE, IDAHO, UNITED STATES, September 22, 2021 / — Clēnera and SRP today announced a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between SRP and Clēnera’s affiliate, CO Bar Solar LLC. This PPA represents the utility’s largest standalone solar power plant currently under development northwest of Flagstaff, Arizona. CO Bar Solar is scheduled to be commercially operational in 2024 and will deliver between 440 and 480 megawatts (MWdc) of renewable energy to SRP customers. Clēnera, a developer of large-scale solar and storage projects, and a subsidiary of Enlight Renewable Energy LTD (TASE: ENLT), will construct and operate CO Bar Solar.

This project is one of many that support SRP in its long-term decarbonization goals. It will also help SRP meet its expanded commitment to add 2,025 MWac of new utility-scale solar resources by 2025.

“SRP is pleased to partner with Clēnera to add this substantial solar resource as part of our diversified energy mix and power generation strategy to meet the Valley’s growing electricity needs,” said Mike Hummel, SRP General Manager and CEO. “The CO Bar power plant is an incredible clean energy resource that will support SRP customers and help us take a significant step toward our decarbonization goals.”

CO Bar Solar will occupy up to 2,400 acres of private land in Coconino County and construction is expected to begin in 2023. Over the course of the 18-month construction timeline, it is expected that approximately 550 construction jobs will be created, with many being local. Once complete, CO Bar Solar will generate enough power to meet the needs of 80,000 homes, while offsetting 1 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Clēnera’s Vice President of Business Development, Jared McKee, said of the partnership: “We are excited to be working with SRP to develop one of the largest solar projects in Arizona. Clēnera has historically paved the way for renewable energy in the state, and CO Bar Solar is yet another example of progress being made in Arizona’s clean energy sector. Including this addition and others, SRP expects that nearly 50 percent of the retail energy it delivers to its customers will come from carbon free resources by 2025. These new renewable energy resources contribute to SRP’s 2035 goals to reduce carbon intensity by 65 percent in 2035 and by 90 percent in 2050 from 2005 levels.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND, UK, September 22, 2021 / — Sunamp, the thermal storage technologies company, has received a 6 million-pound ($8.3 million) convertible loan note investment from the Scottish National Investment Bank. Sunamp will use these funds to increase its sales in the UK, scale up production, and to accelerate international expansion into China, the Americas and continental Europe.

Sunamp is already active in 17 countries and has so far shipped over 15 thousand thermal batteries for the residential market from its UK manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It recently opened new premises in Zurich and will open its first overseas manufacturing facility under licence in Korea in October 2021.

Sunamp’s compact thermal stores are designed to have a lifespan of up to 50 years, and to be highly circular in their product life cycle. The product range includes the world’s most compact and most energy efficient alternative to hot water cylinders and storage water heaters. Connected to renewable energy sources such as heat pumps, Sunamp heat batteries support net zero heating and hot water, using less energy than other forms of thermal storage, and taking up a fraction of the space. Utility companies and their customers can benefit by using these compact thermal stores to support demand response as an alternative to new network infrastructure investment.

By harnessing innovation and enabling the adoption of renewable energy, the investment in Sunamp aligns with the Bank’s missions to support Scotland’s transition to net zero and invest in innovation and technologies of the future for a healthier, more resilient and productive population.

In addition to global expansion, the Bank’s investment will support Sunamp to enhance its product line into container scale thermal batteries that improve efficiencies of heating and cooling for business and industry, and further developing its solutions to drive fuel economy up and carbon emissions down for the automotive industry.

There are many exciting deals in the pipeline, including some that will see us become firmly established in commercial, industrial and automotive markets as well.”
